Black and White is the way to go!!
In the ever-evolving landscape of fashion photography, where digital reigns supreme, there is a timeless allure to the classic art of shooting black and white film in a studio setting. The monochromatic palette lends a certain depth and sophistication to fashion imagery, creating a visual narrative that transcends the fleeting trends of color.
One of the most enchanting aspects of using black and white film in the studio is the way it accentuates the interplay of light and shadow. The absence of color allows photographers to focus on the subtleties of tone and contrast, creating a dramatic and emotive atmosphere within each frame. This heightened sense of contrast adds an element of mystery and elegance, emphasizing the intricate details of the clothing, textures, and the model's expression.
Working with black and white film also demands a meticulous approach to composition. Every element within the frame takes on heightened importance, from the careful arrangement of props to the precise positioning of the model. The photographer must be attuned to the nuances of shape and form, as these elements become the building blocks of a visually striking composition.

Furthermore, shooting in black and white film forces a deliberate consideration of styling choices. Designers and stylists often collaborate closely with photographers to ensure that the clothing and accessories selected will translate effectively into shades of gray. This collaborative process emphasizes the importance of craftsmanship and design details, as these elements are showcased prominently without the distraction of color.
In a world saturated with digital imagery, the resurgence of black and white film in studio fashion photography speaks to a desire for a return to authenticity and a celebration of the artistry inherent in the craft. The tangible, tactile nature of film, coupled with the timeless aesthetic it imparts, creates a unique space within the fast-paced realm of fashion photography. As photographers continue to experiment and push boundaries, the allure of black and white film remains an enduring choice for those seeking to capture the essence of elegance and sophistication.

Cinestill 800T: Unlocking the Mystique of Motion Picture Film for Still Photography
In the digital age, where most photographers rely on advanced sensors and image processors, there's a growing fascination with the nostalgic charm of film photography. Among the numerous film stocks available, Cinestill 800T stands out as a unique option that bridges the gap between motion picture film and still photography. In this blog post, we'll delve into the captivating characteristics of Cinestill 800T and explore why it has become a favorite among film enthusiasts and professional photographers alike. To understand the essence of Cinestill 800T, it's essential to explore its origins. Originally a motion picture film used in the film industry, Cinestill 800T is a modified version of Kodak Vision3 500T. It was initially transformed into an accessible format for still photographers by removing the remjet layer, making it easier to process in standard C-41 chemistry. This unique conversion process retains the cinematic qualities of the original film, resulting in stunning images with a distinct character.
One of the most remarkable features of Cinestill 800T is its ability to evoke a cinematic ambiance in still photographs. With an extended exposure latitude, it excels in low-light situations, providing rich colors, fine grain, and excellent shadow details. This film stock is particularly renowned for its ability to capture moody scenes, urban environments, and night photography, where it adds a touch of nostalgia and warmth. Cinestill 800T is a tungsten-balanced film, originally designed for use in artificial lighting environments. It replicates the warm tones and unique color rendering of tungsten light sources, creating a distinct aesthetic. When used under daylight conditions, it produces a color shift that can result in creative and unexpected outcomes. Embracing this color characteristic allows photographers to experiment and create stunning visual narratives.
Cinestill 800T has gained a reputation for its remarkable ability to render skin tones in a flattering and natural manner. When used in conjunction with tungsten lighting, which the film is specifically designed for, it enhances the warmth and subtleties of skin tones. The film's color balance and sensitivity to tungsten light contribute to producing images with a cinematic quality that accentuates the beauty and depth of human skin. Whether it's a portrait session or a fashion shoot, Cinestill 800T's rendering of skin tones adds an ethereal and nostalgic touch to the final result. Tungsten lighting creates a unique ambiance and a timeless feel, often associated with classic cinema. Cinestill 800T's tungsten balance complements the warm hues produced by these lights, resulting in a harmonious combination. When shooting portraits or fashion photography with tungsten lighting, the film stock elevates the scene, adding an unmistakable cinematic magic. The subtle interplay between the tungsten light and the film's characteristics contributes to capturing a sense of intimacy and evoking emotions within the viewer. While Cinestill 800T is renowned for its compatibility with tungsten lighting, it also shines in various lighting scenarios. Its versatility allows photographers to experiment with different light sources and settings, such as mixed lighting environments. When used creatively, this film can produce captivating results by capturing the interplay between warm and cool lighting sources, leading to dynamic and visually compelling compositions. It opens up a world of possibilities for photographers to explore and create stunning imagery with a distinct aesthetic.
Beyond technical considerations, using Cinestill 800T and its compatibility with tungsten lighting adds an artistic dimension to photography. The interplay between the film's characteristics, the unique qualities of tungsten lighting, and the subject matter create a captivating visual experience. By incorporating these elements into your photographic work, you can infuse a touch of classic cinematography into your still images, fostering a sense of storytelling and creating a lasting impression on viewers.
Incorporating Cinestill 800T and its compatibility with tungsten lighting into your photographic practice allows you to explore the nuanced beauty of skin tones, evoke nostalgic aesthetics, and tap into the emotional connections associated with classic cinema. It's a combination that unlocks a world of creative possibilities, enabling you to create visually stunning and emotionally engaging photographs that stand out from the digital realm.

Cinestill 800T is more than just a film stock; it's a bridge between the worlds of motion picture and still photography. Its ability to capture cinematic ambiance, embrace the tungsten aesthetic, push the boundaries of ISO, and encourage the acceptance of imperfections make it a captivating choice for photographers seeking a distinctive and nostalgic visual experience. Whether you're a seasoned film enthusiast or a digital photographer curious about exploring film, Cinestill 800T offers a creative avenue to embark on an enchanting photographic journey.

One Roll - Cinestill 800T
Being a photographer that specializes in shooting live subjects has been difficult during this global pandemic. As we are not able to be around others except for our immediate households it has taken quite a hit on what I do professionally. We cannot gather our full teams, meaning: fashion stylists, makeup artists, hairstylists, and of course models. I had to find a way to scratch the itch, and by that, I mean taking photographs. I had been hoarding a few rolls of CineStill 800T for quite a few months now. I had hopes of using this specific film for a night time project or editorial when the weather got warmer and allowed for longer shooting times.
I want to remind you that I exclusively only take photographs of people. Specifically, I find it quite hard to compose a photograph without having live subjects. I decided that I needed to go out, and give it my best shot, with proper equipment of course (I wore an N95 mask and latex gloves). I frequented local places that would often have a large expanse of people at night. I was intrigued by the emptiness and thought with this film it could give a mood of loneliness straight out of camera.
If you are familiar with this film then you would be familiar with the colors it renders, and the halation around the light sources. Given that, I was mostly happy with the results of these photographs. Overall, it was a challenge for me from the beginning, and taking steps out of my comfort zone. I believe I will in the future take more chances on projects like these. And, not limit myself as much in my field of photography.
My equipment for this consisted of Canon EOS650, Canon EF 24-70mm F/2.8 MK2, Canon EF 70-200 F/2.8MK3, and of course a single roll of CineStill 800T.
